O2 Telefónica's new O2 mast transmits in Patriching, Bavaria, with the latest 5G network technology
Telecommunications provider O2 Telefónica has already made progress in network expansion at the start of the year. In recent weeks, the company has implemented more than 1,600 measures to further increase the performance of the O2 mobile network. The expansion focused on improving network coverage in previously underserved communities and installing additional capacity for a faster network. O2 Telefónica has put around 100 new sites into operation, improving network reception in communities and along railroad lines and roads. In many cases they are bringing the fast O2 network to sparsely populated regions for the first time.

“We have big plans for the expansion year 2025. Because Germany needs strong networks. With the expansion program, we are ensuring that our customers across the country have even better network quality for their mobile telephony and data usage,” says Alexander Seitz, the director regional planning of delivery and optimisation at O2 Telefónica. “We are setting up new sites to bring the fast O2 network to more households and communities. Better reception along traffic routes and railroad lines ensures that consumers and business customers always stay connected, even when they are on the move.” A newly erected O2 mobile base station in the municipality of Wingst in the district of Cuxhaven serves not only the local population but also drivers on the B73 federal highway. In March, an additional mast was also put into operation in the Oberelsaff district of the municipality of Neustadt (Wied). The district of Auernheim, near Treuchtlingen, is the highest place in Central Franconia – O2 Telefónica recently began providing the surrounding area with fast mobile communications from there. Another new location improves the network in Freilassing, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Austrian border.
5G for more than 97% of the population
O2 Telefónica expanded its network by around 500 5G transmitters between January and March. The company now reaches more than 97% of the population with 5G. The network technicians have expanded the 5G network in numerous cities such as Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt am Main, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Leipzig and Magdeburg. New 5G transmitters are also operating in Königsfeld in the Black Forest, Bad Staffelstein, Massen-Niederlausitz, Burg Stargard, Porta Westfalica, Eilsleben and Heilshoop. In these and numerous other cities and municipalities, O2 customers now benefit from the advantages of the modern 5G standard
Furthermore, O2 Telefónica has installed additional network capacities at around 1000 mobile network locations. This offers O2 customers higher speeds for mobile surfing as well as music and video streaming. In 2024, the O2 network handled around 5.7 billion gigabytes of mobile data volume. That is almost six times as much data as five years ago, when data usage reached 1 billion gigabytes for the first time. The O2 network thus shoulders around half of the mobile data traffic in Germany. With its comprehensive expansion program, O2 Telefónica is ensuring that its 45 million customers benefit from a better, faster and more modern network.
