I have to adjust the striker pin so the door will shut right. Right now, I have o slam the door hard, some times more than once, to get it to shut. Now I know how to adjust the striker, so that is no problem . . . . My question is this, I want to clean the years of crap out of the claw (catch), and I am thinking carb or brake cleaner, and then re-lube it with WD-40, white lithium (spray) grease, or __________ ? What do you recommend ? Just shoot the latch with a true penetrating lubricant (PB Blaster, Knock 'Er Loose, etc...) and it should free right up. Windows- they're what make a van worth owning! | Re: How would you. . . . . I used various tools to remove as much of it as I could, and a bunch of curses as it goes deep and it tough as leather, but not tough enough not to degrade and fall apart. I used wd40 or something simlar just to loosen up the action, cleaned with q tips and more wd40 and then white lithium grease, working it in deep with the tube, but white lithium grease can do funny things in really cold weather and can be a bitch to remove as well. I've also found a graphite spray works great, just shake the can a lot first and let it dry completly before using the door catch, and wipe the excess black stuff off the striker or it will end up on your clothes. The Door catch outer ring needs to be smooth, and the inner round part on mine has a roller on it, and it helps greatly if this spins smoothly. Do find the proper torx/star wrench to move the adjuster catch. The vice grip trick is a last resort of the desperate who then must resort to the file to remove the tooth marks. And do assume that the last person who attempted to adjust it, was high on Meth and hadn't made a rational decision before or since. | Re: How would you. . . . . wrcsixeight #603705 February 24th 2013 11:12 am | Joined: May 2007 Posts: 9,854 Likes: 8 Uncle_Fester OP Festerus Vannimus | OP Festerus Vannimus Joined: May 2007 Posts: 9,854 Likes: 8 | Originally Posted by wrcsixeight And do assume that the last person who attempted to adjust it, was high on Meth and hadn't made a rational decision before or since. yeah, why is it , our vans almost always seem to be owned by brain dead meth heads prior to us ? Mine had a lot of play and I had to replace the bottom one. The door was dropping because of this and I literally had to lift it till I did this. Shanning P. Alberta, Canada

I didn't say the previous owner was a meth head, I said the last person who decided that he could make the door work better and get to bust out inadequate tools and tweek over a task could be guilty of thinking that the door seals needed to be compressed until they split, and metal was on metal. I can just see some frazzled skinny sleep deprived tweeker with a pair of vice grips slamming the door at 4am under a streetlight, and deciding it needed to be slammed harder, so he pushed the catch further and further back, and upward too, less those pesky hinges think they are getting off easy. I had to do the same on my 94. The doors would latch but I was getting air leaks, so I snugged up the striker a bit and lubed the latch. All is well now. As mentioned above, you hinges & pins are the normal problems. A little tweek with this tool and things will line up unless there is too much play in the hinges. Most auto parts store carry over size bushing/pin kits. http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/lisle-door-adjuster-65800-p-13957.aspx Chuck 1988 Dodge B250 "Bloody Mary" Shenandoah Valley Vans | Re: How would you. . . . . I am familiar with the tool you linked, but don't own one. The striker shows signs of being moved before, so it APPEARS it is just out of adjustment, and needs a cleaning.
